The Story Behind the Man: George Soros, a Hungarian American Investor, Philanthropist and Businessman

George Soros was born in Budapest, Hungary on August 12, 1930 under his original name of Gyorgy Schwartz. George did not have an easy life while growing up due to his family being Jewish in Europe during World War II. In 1944-1945, the Nazis occupied Hungary and killed more than 500 thousand Hungarian-Jewish residents. George’s family was able to escape this fate by securing false papers to conceal their family’s heritage and background. He once said, “instead of submitting to our fate, we resisted an evil force that was much stronger than we were – yet, we prevailed. Not only did we survive, but we managed to help others.” This would become the cornerstone of George’s life.

As the communists came into Hungary and began to consolidate power, George decided to leave Budapest in 1947 and head to the city of London. When we got to London, he worked constantly. During the day, he worked as a part-time railroad porter and, at night, he worked as a night-club waiter. He used the money he made working these jobs to support his schooling at the London School of Economics. He would continue on to work many different jobs at merchant banks in England.

In 1956, George would emigrate to the United States to do the same work he was doing in England. In 1969, he would start his first hedge fund called Double Eagle. The profits he would earn from this hedge fund would be rolled into starting his own company named Soros Fund Management. This would also lead to his second hedge fund in 1970 that would later be named Quantum Fund. At first, the fund had 12 million under management, but by 2011 it had 25 billion and held the majority of Soro’s own net worth.

What makes George so famous is the fact that he is best known for bringing down the bank of England with his short sale of the British Pound, also known as the Pound Sterling. In 1992, George would take 10 billion US dollars and short the British pound – an even which is referred to as “Black Wednesday”. He would arise from this event the victor, gaining an astounding 1 billion dollars in profit for his fund. With actions like this, it’s no wonder George is a multi-billionaire with a net worth of $8 billion at the time of this article.

George Soros is a genius that has been able to make billions of dollars not only for himself, but also for his clients and the world. That’s right, George is a very generous man. He gifted a good portion of his net worth to charities around the world. Forbes estimates that before giving between $15-18 billion dollars, George had a net worth of $23 billion. George donated billions to various charities and organizations through his own philanthropic foundation, making it one of the world’s largest charitable institutions. His organization fights for individuals and organizations across the globe that are fighting for freedom of expression, transparency, accountable governments, and societies that promote equality and justice for all.

George is definitely a remarkable man. He went from living a life of fear under Nazi rule as a child to becoming the fearless and selfless man that he is today. Soros has dedicated his life to succeeding in what he wanted to achieve and giving a voice to all of those whom are persecuted the way his people were in Hungary during World War II.
